Leather Bag Care: The Core Protocol

The First Step Before First Use

Before you use a new leather bag for the first time, apply a leather protector. This is particularly important for light-coloured bags and smooth-grain leathers that show water marks.

Products: Apple Brand Garde Spray, Collonil Carbon Pro, Saphir Super Invulner. Apply a light, even coat to all exterior leather surfaces. Allow to dry completely (30 minutes) before use.

Waterproofing at the first use prevents a significant category of damage that is difficult or impossible to reverse later.

Conditioning Leather Bags

Leather requires conditioning 2 to 4 times per year depending on how frequently you use the bag and the climate.

Apply a small amount of leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur, Leather Honey, Coach Leather Conditioner) with a soft cloth in small circular motions. Work it into the leather evenly, including in any crevices around hardware. Allow to absorb for 10 to 15 minutes; buff off excess with a clean cloth.

Do not over-condition. Applying conditioning product too frequently or in too large a quantity causes the leather to become soft, lose its structure and attract dust and dirt more readily.

Cleaning Spills Immediately

Liquid spills on leather should be addressed immediately:

  1. Blot (do not rub) with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible
  2. Allow to air dry naturally; never use heat
  3. Once dry, assess for staining and apply a leather cleaner if a mark remains

Oil-based stains: Apply talcum powder, cornstarch or baby powder to the oil stain immediately. The powder absorbs the oil from the leather surface. Leave for 30 minutes, brush away gently and assess. Repeat if necessary. Do not rub; this spreads the oil further into the grain.

Ink stains: Ink stains on leather are among the most difficult to remove at home. A specialist leather cleaning service produces better results than home treatment for significant ink marks.

Storage: The Decisions That Preserve Long-Term Condition

Always stuff your bag when storing. An unstuffed bag that is placed flat or on its side will develop creases, collapse at the sides and lose its shape over months and years. Stuff with acid-free tissue paper, bubble wrap or the bag's original stuffing. Fill the bag to its intended shape without over-stuffing to the point of stressing seams.

Store upright on the base. Storing bags on their sides puts sustained pressure on the hardware and creates permanent creasing along the side panels.

Store in dust bags, not plastic. The dust bags provided with luxury bags are the correct storage solution. They allow the leather to breathe. Plastic bags trap moisture, which promotes mildew growth and causes hardware to tarnish.

Store away from direct light. UV exposure fades leather colour consistently over time. A light bag stored in a sunny wardrobe will show noticeable colour change within one to two years.

Keep bags away from other bags during storage. Hardware from adjacent bags scratches leather surfaces. Store bags individually in their dust bags with space between them.

Hardware Care

Metal hardware (gold-tone, silver-tone, palladium, ruthenium) tarnishes and scratches with daily use. Maintaining hardware extends its appearance significantly.

Cleaning hardware: Use a soft dry cloth after each use to wipe away fingerprints. For deeper cleaning, use a jewellery polishing cloth (the yellow and red layered cloths) on hardware that has developed surface tarnish. Avoid liquid cleaners on hardware adjacent to leather; chemicals damage the leather surface.

Hardware scratching: Fine scratches on hardware are normal and accumulate with use. Deep scratches require professional re-plating to address fully. Preventing scratches: keep the bag in its dust bag during storage, avoid placing it hardware-side down on hard surfaces.

Authentication: The Indicators That Matter

Counterfeit luxury bags have improved significantly in quality. Identifying fakes now requires attention to multiple indicators rather than one obvious flaw.

Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas

Stitching: Authentic LV stitching is even, consistent in stitch count per centimetre and golden-yellow in colour (not orange or cream). Stitch count varies by hardware type and location but is precise on authentic pieces.

Date code (serial number): Authentic LV bags have a date code stamped (not embossed) inside. The code format encodes the factory and production month/year. The code should be in the correct location for the specific bag model. Fake codes are often in incorrect locations or use outdated formats.

Monogram alignment: On genuine LV monogram pieces, the pattern aligns precisely at all seams and handles. Misalignment at seams is a reliable indicator of a counterfeit.

Chanel Classic Flap

Quilting: Authentic Chanel quilting is perfectly even with a specific stitch count. The diamonds are symmetrical. Counterfeit quilting often shows uneven diamond sizes or inconsistent stitch depth.

Hologram sticker: Every authentic Chanel bag produced after 1984 has a hologram sticker on the interior. The sticker should be cleanly adhered and the hologram should shift visibly in different lighting. The number on the sticker corresponds with a card that came with the bag.

Lining quality: Authentic Chanel interiors use a quality grosgrain or leather lining stitched precisely. Counterfeit linings often use thinner fabric with uneven or loose stitching.

Hermès Birkin and Kelly

Stitching (the "sellier" tell): Hermès bags are hand-stitched using a saddle stitch. Two needles are used simultaneously, producing an angled stitch pattern that is distinctive and impossible to replicate with a machine. Machine stitching (parallel vertical threads) indicates a counterfeit.

Hardware: Hermès hardware is engraved, not stamped. Run your finger across the lettering; authentic hardware has a tactile quality that stamped hardware does not. All hardware on an authentic Birkin is heavyweight.

Blind stamp: Every Hermès piece has a craftsperson's stamp inside. The stamp format indicates the year of production. Knowing the correct stamp format for the bag's stated age eliminates counterfeit claims about vintage pieces.

Professional authentication: For any purchase above £1,000, use a professional authentication service (Entrupy, Real Authentication, Bababebi) before completing the purchase. These services provide a certificate of authenticity and are widely accepted by resale platforms.
