The Capsule Formula: Combinations Over Volume
A wardrobe of 50 poorly matched items produces fewer wearable outfits than 10 items chosen with colour and proportion in mind. The capsule principle is not about owning less; it is about each item working harder.
The requirement for a functional capsule is colour palette discipline. Every item shares at least one colour with every other item in the set. This is what produces maximum combinations from minimum pieces.
Choosing Your Capsule Colour Palette
Select two neutrals and one accent colour. Every item belongs to one of these three categories.
Reliable neutral pairs:
| Neutral 1 | Neutral 2 | Works With Accent |
|---|---|---|
| Navy | White or cream | Rust, red, camel |
| Black | White or cream | Any accent |
| Camel or tan | White | Navy, olive, burgundy |
| Grey | White | Blue, green, burgundy |
| Olive | Cream | Navy, rust, brown |
The test: Every item in your 10-piece capsule should pair visually with at least 4 other items. If an item pairs with only 2, it does not belong in the set.

Match My StyleChat With the Fashion AdvisorProportion Guidance by Body Shape
Pear Shape (Narrower Shoulders, Fuller Hips)
Goal: Balance the shoulder-to-hip ratio by adding visual width to the upper body.
- Structured blazers and jackets with shoulder detail add width above
- Boat-neck and off-shoulder tops draw the eye upward
- Dark, streamlined bottoms (dark jeans, straight trousers) reduce emphasis below
- A-line skirts in structured fabrics skim the hip without adding bulk
From your capsule: Items 2 (wide-leg trouser), 7 (button-down), 8 (blazer) and 10 (wrap dress) work particularly well for pear proportions.
Apple Shape (Fuller Midsection, Narrower Hips and Legs)
Goal: Create defined structure around the midsection and draw attention to strong legs and décolletage.
- V-neck tops lengthen the torso and draw the eye vertically
- Wrap dresses and wrap tops create a defined waist
- High-waisted bottoms when tucked into them create waist definition
- Straight-leg and wide-leg trousers in dark colours elongate the lower body
From your capsule: Items 10 (wrap dress), 6 (fine-knit), 2 (wide-leg trouser) and 4 (fitted base top tucked into high-waisted bottom) address apple proportions well.
Rectangle Shape (Similar Shoulder, Waist and Hip Measurements)
Goal: Create the impression of curves by adding volume above and below the waist.
- Peplum tops and flared skirts create hip definition
- Belts worn at the waist define a narrower point
- Ruffled, textured or patterned tops add upper body volume
- Cropped tops paired with high-waisted bottoms break the vertical line
From your capsule: Items 3 (fuller skirt), 5 (patterned top), 9 (belted cardigan) and a belt added to 10 (wrap dress) work for rectangle proportions.
Inverted Triangle (Broader Shoulders, Narrower Hips)
Goal: Balance the shoulder-to-hip ratio by minimising upper volume and adding fullness below.
- V-necks and scoop necks soften the shoulder line
- Wide-leg trousers and A-line skirts add lower-body volume
- Avoid boat-necks, cap sleeves and horizontal stripes across the chest
- Soft, draped fabrics on tops reduce the structural effect of broader shoulders
From your capsule: Items 2 (wide-leg trouser), 3 (full skirt), 4 (simple base top) and 10 (wrap dress) are the strongest performers for inverted triangle proportions.
The 3-Shoe Rule
Shoes are the heaviest items in any capsule. Three pairs cover every occasion in the 10-piece wardrobe:
- White or neutral trainers or loafers (casual daytime)
- Ankle boots or block-heel shoes (smart casual to evening)
- Sandals (warm weather, beach, light evenings)
All three share a neutral colour that works with every bottom in the capsule.
